This past spring while attending a college graduation, I was struck
by a lady in her late 60's who was receiving her diploma. To this lady,
learning and personal growth had no age limit.
Get around people who have something of value
to share with you. Their impact will continue to have a significant
effect on your life long they have departed.
- Jim Rohn-
It's About Working HarderToo many times as professionals we allow ourselves
to fall into a comfortable routine where we are working hard on the
wrong things. Jim Rohn, one of the world's leading motivational speaker,
philosopher and entrepreneur reminds us that we need to "work harder
on ourselves than we do on our jobs". By working on ourselves we
become more valuable to our organizations and to the market place. Ask
yourself, when was the last time you took a class or attended a seminar
or read a book to improve the way you do your job?
In this time of rapidly changing technology, we can never stop searching
for more and better ways to do our jobs. People and organizations that
are not busy searching for new and better ways to conduct business will
become stagnate or fold all together. Wise leaders know that education
is an investment in the future and the investor will be rewarded ten
fold for their effort.
Getting Out Of The Bubble
Do not allow your office to become an insulted bubble where your contact
with the rest of the nonprofit community is lost. Find clubs, organizations
or classes that you can commit some of your time to areas will help
you grow. This past year we joined the AFP (Association of Fundraising
Professionals) and began to attend their monthly chapter meetings. It
is amazing what new and exciting ideas are shared when you get away
from the office and network with other professionals in your industry.
Networking with other organizations is definitely
a two way street and everyone is there to learn something new. You never
know when you may have the information that is just what another smaller
organization is needing. We are all a part of the nonprofit community
and the sharing of information increases the strength of each of us
as well as the whole community.
The advise of Jim Rohn that teaches us to "work harder on ourselves
than we do on our job" will give us more tools to do what we do
better. He also instructs us to "become a good student" and
to invest in our future. Commit some of your time to get away from the
desk and network with other people who can inspire you. And while you
are out there growing, do not forget to give a hand to those you might
meet that you may inspire.
Every week we spend time with organizations that have been using our
software for many years but find that they are not using the software
to the fullest advantage. Through the process of reviewing the software,
even seasoned DonorExpress users learn new tricks that helps
them do their job better. Many find that their organization and their
software usage has grown over the years but the procedures for using
their software have not kept up with this growth. Training sessions
are an inexpensive way to take a fresh look at how you are using your
software and the procedures established for data collection and donor
recognition.
Any organization that has experienced turn over in their staff and/or
management or are just wanting a review of their software and procedures
should invest in training. Money spent on training will almost always
reward the organization with more skilled performance from their employees.
